Nebraska’s updated highway safety laws expand protections for drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and other vulnerable road users.
Under LB 530, drivers must move over, slow down, and proceed with caution when approaching stopped vehicles or vulnerable road users on the side of the highway. This includes:
- Any stopped vehicle on the same side of the highway
- Pedestrians
- Bicyclists
- People in crosswalks
- Agricultural vehicles or equipment
Additional safety updates include higher speeding fines, expanded reckless-driving penalties for traveling more than twice the posted speed limit, an increased penalty for motor vehicle homicide, and new authority for the Nebraska Department of Transportation to temporarily lower speed limits during severe weather, emergencies, or traffic congestion.
These changes are designed to help make Nebraska roads safer for everyone.
